The Cottage

Washington Island, at the tip of Wisconsin's picturesque Door County peninsula, is home to quaint fishing harbors, rich woodlands, pastoral farmland and a deep Scandinavian heritage. Since the 1920's the Carr family cottage has provided its owners respite from the workaday. The original vertical log cabin was built by Jens Jacobsen, an Island settler and woodworker. The building has been expanded several times around that first 12x16 structure, which is now the heart of it all, the family kitchen. The Cottage invites vacationers to leave their watches at home, escape the daily routine and enjoy the peaceful life that is Washington Island.

Need room to roam? If so, you've come to the right place. The Cottage is situated in a woods consisting of birch, white cedar and maple and is literally a stones throw from the islands northwestern shore.
Watch the spectacular sunsets over Green Bay, then curl up with a good book-or a loved one-next to the crackling fire in the Franklin fireplace, with waves lapping the 200' of shoreline only 75' away. Sleep in every day, or walk the rocky beach in the early morning fog. If you're lucky, you might even hear a loon. The Cottage

Be sure to see the rest of the Island, too. Schoolhouse Beach, the Art and Nature Center, Mountain Tower Park and Lookout, Seivers School of Fiber Arts, Jackson Harbor and its Maritime Museum, Sand Dunes beach and several gift shops are just a few of the highlights. Explore the more than 100 miles of roads on a rental bike or moped or take a 90 minute "Cherry Train" tour of the Island. Don't miss a trip on the passenger ferry to Rock Island State park to visit the historic Viking Hall boat house and beautiful sand beach. And if you have some energy to spare, hike to the old lighthouse at the north side of Rock Island.

The Washington Island car ferry provides transportation to and from the mainland, where you can visit quaint (and numerous) shops. Or stay on the Island and try its 9 hole golf course, then enjoy a night out "uptown" with a traditional Door County fish boil at one of the local restaurants. Finish the night off with a shot of bitters at historic Nelsen's Bar.

The Cottage is clean and well-maintained. Visitors need provide only food (groceries can be purchased at Manns Store), clothing, beach towels; everything else has already been thought of. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware and dishes; the Carr families Blue Willow china adds a homey touch to the dining room table. The bathroom is supplied with soap, towels, washcloths and a full size washer and dryer are available. A wildflower-filled clearing is home for a sleepy double hammock, charcoal grill, picnic table and extra chairs for your outdoor living pleasure. Atrium Wildflowers
